Book Review: A Twisted Tale – Little Mermaid

Part of your World
A Twisted Tale
What if Ariel had never defeated Ursula?

Blurb
“It’s been 5 years since the infamous sea witch and the little mermaid…taking King Triton’s life in the process. Ariel is now the voiceless queen of Atlantica, while Ursula runs Prince Eric’s Kingdom on land.”

Written by Liz Braswell

Overview
This book picks up 5 years after Ariel lost her love, father and voice to Ursula at the end of the original movie. It describes Ariels interaction and beautifully her adaptions to sign language under the sea to communicate. As acting Queen Ariel has put on her crown and rocks it as a power queen.

The story takes her through under the sea and above the sea, as a whisper that Triton is still alive on land. Her time old friends help her out and the power of the sea in her hands helps her explore the dry world in the search for her father…without getting caught by Ursula again.

Review
I loved this twist on the classic Little Mermaid tale. The twists and turns, with the picturesque details of the scenery kept me hook. If you love Ariel, this is a great view on her as a mature, seasoned adventurer as she takes to the land to find her father.

If you, like some people, always struggle with the flimsy ideals of princesses in love, these twisted tales are so empowering for the female leads to stand up and hold their own.

Ariel has always been seen as someone who rushes off, but this story certainly shows how she can have a levelled and calculating head in the face of danger. There’s still a little fairytale romance, but the threat of being found by Ursula is real and certainly kept me hooked right to the end.

Recommendations
This is a great book for tweens to adults. For all the Disney fans, this is worth a read for anyone who craves more from Disney. Remember this is a book that twists the story to give a different line, so don’t be too made if something happens you’r not ready. It’s highly empowering to the female characters and certainly made me grow more fond of Ariel as a character and not just as a red haired, mermaid.
